How to Make Music Marketing a Walk in the Park

YOOO... It's Willy Chill!!

I just got back from a very NOT chill road trip across the country from Chicago to Colorado, Colorado to the Grand Canyon, then, of course, the canyon back to Chicago!! By far one of the most dangerous and challenging endeavors I've ever experienced in my life so far!

BUT... Vinnie also told a riveting story about Hennessy this week too on the MIC podcast!

You'll have to be the judge of which was better from the episode...
- Spotify
- YouTube
Apple Podcasts

But naturally, Vinne got this incredible story out of me about how I hiked to the highest natural hot spring in North America (up 13,000ft) and spent 4 days at the bottom of the Grand Canyon (down 7,000ft) all in less than a week..... what a way to start the Music Industry Chat (MIC) podcast this past week!

But outside of all the lovely vacation stories, we also chatted at length about some really interesting digital advertising strategies we've been working to create and test inside the Artist...

4 Tools to Increase Your Music Podcast Listeners

Hey everyone!

Long story short, I was writing a private email to my buddy Lenny Schmidt after being a guest on his podcast. I get a little raunchy and it's not musically educational unless you wanna hear the uncut story of my American Idol XV escapades. (If you're curious, listen here:

Anyways, as I was typing out the email to teach him a few techniques I've picked up about growing music podcast followings and I realized this was some stuff that everyone could use. So here we are! I've somewhat adapted the tools I recommended to my friend to the rest of you guys FREE OF CHARGE! Lol.

I've been lucky enough to have some amazing people on our Music Industry Chat Podcast that have told me about these tools and I personally use them religiously, now. If you've stumbled upon here and aren't a musician or artist, feel free to use the tips and then share the article to a few artists that could benefit! The mission is to get as many creatives...

The Artist Collective Branding Method for Music Business

announcement branding Oct 05, 2020

This month we are focusing on music branding within Artist Collective. I am walking members through the creation of their own 'Artist Branding Guide' to give their branding a framework.

I see branding as much more than logos and color schemes. When I see successful brands, I see deep connections and understanding of their customers. They connect with them through values and passions before products and flash.

Artist usually miss this mark because they are too focused on that sizzle. Instead of taking time to be introspective and figuring out the "why" behind the brand, they go straight to wanting the fans but don't know how to talk to them directly. Huge disconnect.

Through the years I have worked with dozens of music companies to help them craft a brand that stays true to them and also attracts more super fans. Though the messages were all different, the formula was the same. We always went through the same 6 steps to find the perfect blend of message,...

How To Make Sure Your New Music Release is Successful.

Alright, imagine something with me here. ...

You spend months writing and recording your newest song.

You spend tons of money on the best studio with the best producer.

You get a top-notch mixing & mastering engineer to make it sound crispy.

And maybe even hire a dope artist to feature on it.

Then, you get an incredible local artist to whip up some artwork so that the single really pops.

And finally, after months (maybe even years) of creating you are ready to release it. And what happens?...

You just release it. No planning. No marketing budget. No promotional plan at all. Then it doesn't do well and you become frustrated and discouraged saying things like "all this hard work for nothing".

Does this sound too familiar? If so, you are definitely not alone. Every single artist I have ever worked with has had this problem (even my own band).

So what is the disconnect? Maybe its fatigue from the creation process and you just want to "get it out there", or it's fear of...

You make awesome music. You host fun livestreams. You share great content. Now you need to get the word out.

But with so many social media platforms out there, creating content to promote your music can be a tiring process as you jump between making static image posts, short-form promo videos, longer YouTube videos, graphics for livestreams, posters, video thumbnails...the list seems endless.

However, you no longer need different software to complete every task – Kapwing can do it all.

Kapwing is an online software that helps you make modern content in as few clicks as possible, and you can get started for free. You can make everything from videos to GIFs...

How to List Your Virtual Events on Spotify

Covid has caused all kinds of turmoil within the entertainment industry leading to live events postponed until at least 2021! But in the wake of live events being canceled live-streaming has taken over the internet to replace the dearly missed concerts. I can first hand feel the struggle of wanting to gather with my friends with a few drinks and scream the words of my favorite artist's songs with them while they're on stage... Live-streams have helped ease my pain (although my roommate probably doesn't appreciate all my singing haha)!

BUT there is good news from Spotify to help build live-stream audiences even bigger for artists! Spotify just inked a deal with Songkick to integrate live-stream events on artist's profiles!

With the integration, Spotify is tiptoeing into live streaming, which has boomed in popularity as a replacement for concerts after lockdowns were imposed across much of the world. With concert halls shut and major tours on hold until at least next year, stars such...

“How Many People Can You Bring?” - The Discord Between Musicians & The Hospitality Industry {by Chris Davis}

Uncategorized Jul 13, 2020

“How Many People Can You Bring?”

Written by Chris Davis, Head of Operations & Growth of CountN, Artist Manager, Musician, Berklee Graduate

Anyone who has played local bars, restaurants, breweries etc. has encountered this question. This question typically elicits an eye roll and a number fabricated out of thin air by the musician. Often times the musician has a ticketed show coming up at a sizable venue and has no incentive to bring fans out to a $150 bar gig to hear a crowd-pleasing cover of "Sweet Caroline". Here lies the discord: The owner of the “venue” views music as a way to bring new customers into the bar. The assumption is if the musician can bring 10-20 people through the door, the bar will sell more drinks and the increased revenue will cover the small sum of having music, and provide a more profitable night. In reality, the career musician plays these gigs to put food on the table and pay rent. They have bigger and better gigs...
